If you've ever spec'd a conference room scheduling display, a PoE-powered camera, or any network-attached AV device, you've encountered the three IEEE Power over Ethernet standards: 802.3af, 802.3at, and 802.3bt. They look similar on a spec sheet. They are not the same in the field. Getting the wrong one means a device that won't power up, a switch port that trips, or a retrofit that costs more than it should. This guide breaks down what each standard actually delivers, where each one belongs in a real AV deployment, and how to pick the right hardware the first time.

What Is PoE and Why It Matters for Enterprise AV

Power over Ethernet (PoE) delivers electrical power alongside network data through a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable. For AV integrators, that means one cable run instead of two — no separate power outlet required, no low-voltage electrician on the punch list, and no wall wart taped to the back of a display.

In enterprise deployments, PoE is the standard delivery method for conference room scheduling displays, PTZ cameras, intercoms, access control readers, and increasingly, high-performance computing endpoints. The ability to power devices from the network closet also means centralized power management: UPS backup at the switch, remote power cycling, and clean power that isn't sourced from a shared office circuit.

But PoE is not one-size-fits-all. The standard has evolved across three generations, and the differences in available wattage are significant enough to determine whether a device works at all.

IEEE 802.3af — The Baseline Standard (Up to 15.4W)

802.3af is the original PoE standard, ratified in 2003. It delivers up to 15.4W at the source, with approximately 12.95W available at the powered device (PD) after cable loss.

For its era, that was sufficient. VoIP phones, basic IP cameras, and low-power sensors all fall within the 802.3af envelope. In modern AV deployments, 802.3af is best suited for:

  • Room scheduling tablets running at reduced brightness
  • Desk booking displays with simple UI and minimal processing
  • Presence sensors and occupancy detectors
  • Low-draw IoT endpoints

If your device draws less than 13W and you don't need USB-C Power Delivery headroom, 802.3af is adequate — and lower-cost infrastructure supports it universally.

802.3at, ratified in 2009 and commonly called PoE+, doubles the available power to 30W at the source, with up to 25.5W at the device. It's backward compatible with 802.3af equipment.

IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++) — 60W and 90W for High-Power Applications

802.3bt, finalized in 2018, is the current ceiling of the PoE standard. It defines two sub-types:

  • Type 3 (802.3bt): Up to 60W at the source / ~51W at the device
  • Type 4 (802.3bt Class 8): Up to 90W at the source / ~71.3W at the device

802.3bt uses all four cable pairs for power delivery (vs. two pairs for 802.3af/at), which is why it requires Cat5e or better and benefits from Cat6 in longer runs. It is backward compatible with both prior standards.

At this power tier, the application set expands significantly: high-performance pan-tilt-zoom cameras, thin client workstations, powered USB hubs, LED lighting panels, and large-format conference room displays. 802.3bt is increasingly specified in new enterprise builds where the goal is to eliminate AC outlets from the device layer entirely.

Choosing the Right PoE Standard — A Decision Framework for Integrators

The right PoE tier comes down to three questions:

  1. What does the device actually draw? Check the manufacturer's PoE class specification, not just the rated wattage. Budget 10–15% headroom above the rated draw for startup surge and thermal variation.
  2. What does your infrastructure support? Most enterprise switches deployed in the last five years support 802.3at. 802.3bt requires a newer switch with 4-pair PoE support. Injectors like the POE-90W let you retrofit high-power devices onto legacy infrastructure without replacing the switch.
  3. Is USB-C Power Delivery in the chain? Modern scheduling displays, tablets, and thin clients increasingly use USB-C. Not all PoE-to-USB-C adapters support PD negotiation. The POE-GIG auto-negotiates PD voltage — critical for devices that won't charge on a fixed 5V feed.

When in doubt: size up. The incremental cost difference between an 802.3af and 802.3at adapter is small. The cost of a return trip to a site because the display won't power on is not.
